Pune IT Engineer Payal Pawar-Jhambre Found Dead; Husband Arrested in Dowry Harassment Case
A 29-year-old Pune IT engineer was found dead in another flat belonging to her in-laws. Her family alleges dowry harassment, demands for five tolas of gold and threats, as police investigate the case.
According to the information available, Payal lived with her husband's family in the Mukundnagar area of Pune. She was the daughter-in-law of the owners of the city's prominent Jhambre Palace. On March 30, 2023, Payal gave birth to a daughter. Her family alleges that she was subsequently subjected to continuous harassment because she did not give birth to a son.
In his complaint to the police, Payal's brother, Rishikesh Pawar, stated that his sister had been deeply distressed due to persistent mental and physical harassment by her in-laws. The family has demanded strict action against those responsible and expressed suspicion that Payal was murdered, urging the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
According to her brother, a dispute broke out between Payal, her husband and other members of the marital family on October 31. Late on Saturday night, her family members attempted to contact Payal and her in-laws over the phone, but nobody responded. Before her death, Payal had sent a final message to her brother, stating that if anything happened to her, her mother-in-law would be responsible.
On the morning of November 1, Payal's father-in-law called her parents and informed them that she had gone somewhere from home the previous night and had not returned. Her family said they reached her residence at around 7:30 am on November 2. However, the members of her in-laws' family allegedly failed to provide any clear information about her whereabouts.
The family subsequently began searching for her. When they reached another flat belonging to her in-laws, they found Payal's body there.
Payal's father has alleged that her in-laws had demanded five tolas of gold during Diwali. However, citing their poor financial condition, her family had requested some time to fulfil the demand.
"To protect their reputation, they finished off our daughter. Payal's mother-in-law was extremely arrogant about her wealth. She never treated Payal properly," her father alleged.
He said he was a farmer and that his family was already struggling with drought and financial difficulties. He further alleged that Payal was being pressured to transfer property into her husband's name. According to him, these circumstances had caused her considerable mental distress, although she had continued to tolerate the alleged harassment for the past seven years.
Payal's father also accused her mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law of repeatedly taunting her over her parental family's financial condition. She was allegedly insulted on several occasions and told that her parents were poor. He claimed that she had faced continuous harassment since her marriage and that the circumstances ultimately led to her death.
Payal's brother has also levelled serious allegations against the in-laws, claiming that her mother-in-law allegedly humiliated her and subjected her to mental harassment.
The family has demanded the arrest of Payal's mother-in-law, father-in-law and sister-in-law. Meanwhile, her husband, Akshay Jhambre, has been remanded to police custody until November 7 by the court.
The family has also demanded action against those who allegedly provided shelter to the accused. The Swargate Police are currently investigating the case, with allegations of dowry harassment, domestic abuse and suspected murder forming the focus of the family's demand for a thorough probe.
